Why Volunteer With BVFD?
The Bumpass Volunteer Fire Department is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a 100% volunteer organization — every firefighter, driver, and support member you see on our trucks is a neighbor who chose to serve. Volunteering with BVFD is one of the most direct ways to protect the people of northeastern Louisa County and the Lake Anna area: when a structure fire, vehicle crash, brush fire, or medical emergency happens here, it is volunteers like you who respond.
No experience is required. The department provides all training — Firefighter I and II, driver/operator certification, Emergency Medical Responder and EMT certification, and first aid/CPR — along with all protective gear and equipment, at no cost to you. Members train together regularly at the station, and new members are paired with experienced mentors through our buddy program.
Ways to Serve

Volunteer as an EMT or Emergency Medical Responder
Most of the calls BVFD runs are medical or rescue. In northeastern Louisa County and around Lake Anna, a transport ambulance can be several minutes out — so our members are very often the first trained help on scene. That first response is what BVFD's EMS volunteers provide: assessing the patient, controlling bleeding, starting CPR and using an AED, administering oxygen, and stabilizing the patient until a transport unit arrives and takes over.
BVFD is an on-scene, non-transport EMS provider— we respond and treat, we don't run the ambulance that transports. Alongside that, our crews handle vehicle rescue and extrication: cutting a trapped patient free after a crash and getting them to the transport unit. If you want to serve on the medical and rescue side of the department, those are the roles you would be stepping into, and they are among the most needed we have.
Certification Paths
- CPR / AED — where most new members start
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) — the entry EMS certification
- EMT — the full Virginia EMT certification
- Vehicle rescue — extrication training for crash response
- Dual role — many members certify in both fire and EMS
